C86400 Leaded Manganese Bronze Casting
C86400 (UNS C86400, CDA 864, Leaded Manganese Bronze) is a modified high-tensile brass casting alloy with 0.5–1.5% lead addition to improve machinability versus the unleaded C86200/C86300 grades. With tensile strength of 415 MPa and machinability of approximately 40% CDA, C86400 provides an intermediate option: better machinability than C86200/C86300 while retaining higher strength than standard yellow brass. Used for marine hardware, pump components, and structural castings requiring both reasonable strength and efficient CNC machining.
Alloy Overview
C86400 combines the alpha-beta strengthening of the Mn-Al additions with lead-enhanced machinability. The 0.5–1.5% Pb disperses in the microstructure as fine particles that act as chip-breakers during cutting, reducing tool wear compared to unleaded manganese bronze while only marginally reducing tensile strength vs C86200. A practical choice when complex machined features are required on high-strength brass castings.

Applications
C86400 castings are used for: marine deck fittings and structural hardware requiring CNC machining; pump impellers and casings with threaded connections; valve bodies for seawater and industrial fluid service; worm wheel blanks requiring precision machined tooth profiles; bearing housings and brackets with complex drilled and tapped features; and marine electrical conduit bodies in aggressive environments.
