C87200 Silicon Brass Casting
C87200 (UNS C87200, Silicon Brass) is a high-copper silicon brass casting alloy containing 87–91% copper, 12–16% zinc, and 0.8–2.0% silicon. The silicon addition dramatically increases tensile strength (380–450 MPa), improves fluidity for casting complex thin-wall shapes, and eliminates the need for lead as a machinability additive – making C87200 an important lead-free brass casting option for potable water and green-engineering applications.
Alloy Overview
C87200’s silicon content (0.8–2.0%) raises strength through solid solution hardening of the alpha matrix and dramatically improves casting fluidity, enabling thin-wall sections of 2–3 mm by gravity die or investment casting. The silicon also forms a tenacious SiO₂ surface film that enhances corrosion resistance in acids and industrial atmospheres. Lead-free (Pb max 0.09%), C87200 complies with NSF/ANSI 61, California AB1953, and EU Drinking Water Directive for potable water contact applications.
