Grade Selection — SS 304 vs SS 316 vs SS 316L

SS 304 (1.4301) is the standard austenitic stainless — suitable for indoor, sheltered outdoor, and low-chloride environments. Good corrosion resistance to mild acids and alkalis. SS 316 (1.4401) adds molybdenum (2–3%), giving superior resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion, and marine environments. Specified for coastal, offshore, and marine installations. SS 316L (1.4404) is the low-carbon variant of SS 316 — superior resistance to sensitisation (weld decay) in welded assemblies; specified for welded structural brackets in offshore and chemical plant service.

Sheet Metal Forming and Accuracy

Stainless steel support brackets are formed by CNC press brake bending with ±0.5° angle tolerance and ±0.5 mm dimensional tolerance on bent legs. Hole positions are punched by CNC turret punch to ±0.1 mm. Blank profiles are laser-cut or blanked by progressive die depending on batch size. Weld-prepared edges (chamfered or bevelled) are included for welded structural brackets. Formed bracket stiffness is calculated to carry specified loads with deflection not exceeding L/300 per structural design conventions.

Surface Finish and Aesthetics

2B (cold-rolled, matte) is the standard mill finish for industrial brackets. No.4 (180-grit brushed) is specified for hygienic, food-grade, and architectural applications. BA (bright annealed) is a semi-mirror finish used for decorative and cleanroom applications. Mirror-polished (Ra <0.05 μm) is available for pharmaceutical and laboratory equipment. All surface finishes are maintained through the forming process by protective film or careful handling to avoid surface damage.

Welding and Fabrication Compatibility

SS 316L brackets are designed for weld fabrication using TIG welding with ER316L filler wire per AWS A5.9. Post-weld passivation with citric acid (BS EN ISO 16048) or nitric acid (ASTM A967) restores the passive chromium oxide layer. Pickled and passivated finish is available on welded assemblies. SS 304 brackets may be welded with ER308L filler. All welded assemblies are tested by dimensional inspection and visual/dye-penetrant inspection of welds.

Load Capacity and Engineering Support

Bracket load capacity depends on thickness, span, fixing method, and surface finish. Standard cantilever cable tray brackets (SS 316, 3.0 mm, 500 mm projection) carry 50 kg/bracket at L/300 deflection limit. Heavier-duty versions in 5.0 mm carry 100 kg/bracket. Load calculations and material data sheets are provided with critical structural bracket supply. Engineering support for non-standard loading conditions is available from our technical team.
