CuZn33 / CW508L / C26800 Brass Stamping and Brass Pressed Parts

CuZn33 / CW508L / C26800 Brass Stamping and Brass Pressed Parts

CuZn33 (EN designation CW508L, US equivalent C26800, commonly known as Yellow Brass or 67/33 Brass) is a commercially important brass alloy for stamped and pressed parts, offering an excellent balance between cold-formability, tensile strength, bright yellow colour, and cost-competitive pricing. Containing nominally 66–68.5% copper and 31.5–34% zinc, CuZn33 CW508L is a single-phase alpha brass with formability only marginally lower than CuZn30 (CW505L / C26000 Cartridge Brass), making it well-suited for progressive die stampings, compound-die blanked components, spring contacts in hard temper, and a wide range of electrical hardware pressed parts. Electrical Accessories India manufactures CuZn33 CW508L brass stampings and pressed parts at our Jamnagar, Gujarat facility for electrical OEMs, wiring accessory manufacturers, panel board builders, decorative hardware suppliers, and industrial distributors in India and over 30 export markets.

Alloy Overview – CuZn33 / CW508L / C26800

Metallurgy – Alpha Brass with Cost Advantage

CuZn33 / CW508L is a single-phase alpha brass, with the 66–68.5% copper content keeping the alloy within the FCC alpha-phase region of the Cu-Zn phase diagram at all normal processing and service temperatures. This fully alpha microstructure provides: elongation of 45–60% in the annealed condition (only slightly below C26000’s 50–65%), adequate deep-drawability for moderate-severity draws (LDR up to 2.5 first draw), excellent cold-formability for blanking and bending operations, predictable spring-back for formed contact parts, and good resistance to season cracking and dezincification. Tensile strength in the annealed condition is 310–380 MPa, increasing to 450–530 MPa in hard temper (H04) and up to 570–640 MPa in spring temper (H06). The 2–4% lower copper content versus C26000 provides a meaningful cost reduction in high-volume stamping production where material cost per kilogram dominates the part cost.

Designation Cross-Reference: CuZn33, CW508L, C26800

CuZn33 is the ISO and DIN chemical composition name for this alloy family. CW508L is the EN material number (wrought copper alloy designation under EN 1652). C26800 is the UNS/CDA designation used in ASTM standards. IS 407 Grade 3 is the nearest Indian standard equivalent. Note: In the EN system, CW508L is sometimes listed as CuZn36 or CuZn37 in older literature – buyers should confirm the exact composition in the EN 1652 data sheet. C26800 per ASTM B36 specifies 66.0–68.5% Cu, balance Zn, Pb max 0.07%, Fe max 0.05%.

Electrical Hardware and Pressed Part Applications

CuZn33 CW508L brass stampings and pressed parts are used extensively in electrical hardware and industrial pressed component applications: blanked and formed earth tags and grounding clips for LV switchgear and distribution panels; terminal blades and wiring accessory contact blades for socket outlets, plugs, and switches; fuse carrier contacts and fuse clip stampings; flat-blanked and punched bus links and terminal plates; spring contacts and connector contacts in hard or spring temper for industrial connectors and terminal blocks; decorative switch plates, socket face plates, and architectural hardware stampings in polished and lacquered finish; cable entry blanks and drawn connector shells (moderate drawing depth); and panel hardware components blanked from 1–3 mm sheet. CuZn33’s bright golden-yellow colour and compatibility with nickel, tin, chrome, and gold plating systems make it particularly suitable for decorative electrical accessories requiring a premium appearance.

Pressing and Stamping Process Parameters

Standard process parameters for CuZn33 CW508L in progressive die and compound die stamping: strip thickness 0.3–3.0 mm; draw ratio up to 2.5 (first draw, annealed strip); blanking clearance 4–6% per side; minimum bend radius 0.5×T (annealed, across rolling direction), 0.8×T (annealed, parallel), 1.0×T (half-hard); press speed 100–500 strokes/minute; lubrication with mineral oil stamping lubricant or synthetic press oil; inter-stage annealing at 375–550°C where total true strain exceeds 0.7. Spring-back for CuZn33 hard temper bends: typically 3–5° per 90° bend, compensated in die design by over-bending. Production rates on 6-spindle progressive die: 500–1,500 small parts/minute for thin-strip contacts and clips.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is CuZn33 / CW508L the same as C26800?
Yes, these are the same alloy under different standards systems. CuZn33 is the ISO/DIN chemical designation; CW508L is the EN 1652 material number; C26800 is the UNS/CDA number (ASTM B36). All specify approximately 66–68.5% Cu, balance Zn, Pb ≤ 0.07%.

2. How does CuZn33 CW508L compare to CuZn30 CW505L for stamping?
CuZn33 (C26800) has 2–3% less copper than CuZn30 (C26000), resulting in slightly lower elongation (45–60% vs 50–65% annealed) and marginally lower deep-draw LDR (2.5 vs 2.2+ first draw). For most blanking, bending, and moderate forming operations CuZn33 is equivalent, offering a slight cost advantage. For severe deep drawing, CuZn30 is preferred.

3. Can CuZn33 CW508L be used for spring contacts?
Yes. In hard (H04) or spring (H06) temper, CuZn33 achieves tensile strength of 450–640 MPa with adequate elongation for spring-forming. It is used for bifurcated contacts, leaf spring contacts, fuse clips, and connector contacts in terminal blocks and industrial connectors.

4. What is the typical lead time for CuZn33 stampings?
New tooling: 4–8 weeks for progressive die fabrication + 1–2 weeks FAI = 5–10 weeks to first delivery. Repeat production on existing tooling: 2–4 weeks. Blanked and simple-bend parts without new tooling: 1–3 weeks if standard strip is in stock.

5. Is CuZn33 CW508L RoHS compliant?
Yes. CW508L/C26800 contains max 0.07% Pb — well below the RoHS 2 limit of 0.1% for homogeneous materials. No exemption is required. REACH and RoHS compliance declarations are supplied with each shipment.
