Copper Earthing Tags
Copper Earthing Tags

Copper earthing tags are small, pressed copper components attached to cables, conductors, equipment enclosures, and busbar connections to identify and mark protective earth (PE) connections. Also known as copper earth tags, copper grounding tags, copper cable identification tags, copper bonding labels, copper earth markers, and copper conductor identification pieces, these components are blanked from Cu-ETP (C11000) copper strip and may be stamped, engraved, or punched with identification text or symbols. Electrical Accessories India manufactures copper earthing tags to IEC 60445, BS 7671, and DIN 46433 standards for electrical OEMs, panel builders, EPC contractors, and power utilities worldwide.
Product Overview
Copper Cable Earthing Tags and Identification Labels
Copper earthing tags, also called copper cable tags, copper conductor markers, copper earth identification labels, copper bonding tags, and copper grounding markers, are flat or formed copper pieces with a slot, hole, or loop for attachment to a cable lug, busbar bolt, or conductor clamp. The earth symbol (IEC 60417-5019) or text such as “EARTH”, “PE”, “GND”, or “⏚” can be embossed, engraved, or stamped into the tag surface. Tags are manufactured by blanking copper strip to the required shape and punching attachment holes. Standard sizes from 10 mm × 20 mm to 25 mm × 50 mm; thickness 0.5–2.0 mm. Tin-plated and bare copper options are available.
Copper Lug Tags and Terminal Identification
Copper lug tags, copper terminal labels, copper tee-bar tags, copper flag tags, and copper wrap-around identification markers are fitted to cable lugs, terminal blocks, and busbar bolts to identify circuit references, cable numbers, and earthing system designations. They comply with IEC 60445 (identification of electrical equipment) and IEC 60446 (colour coding and marking of conductors). Custom text, circuit numbers, and alphanumeric references are engraved or stamped on request. These tags are widely used in substations, switchboards, cable tunnels, and industrial control panels for permanent circuit identification.
Copper Earth Continuity Tags and Test Links
Copper earth continuity tags and copper test link labels are fitted at points in the earthing system where periodic testing and inspection is carried out. These tags facilitate identification of earth electrode connections, earth continuity test points, bonding conductor access points, and main earthing terminal locations. Heavy-gauge copper tags (1.5–3.0 mm) are used where structural mounting is required; thin tags (0.5–1.0 mm) for cable attachment. Slotted holes allow attachment without disconnecting the conductor. Comply with IEC 62305-3 and BS 7671 requirements for earthing system documentation and test access.
Copper Transformer and Substation Earthing Tags
In transformer substations, copper earthing tags are fitted to transformer tank earth connections, cable screen bonding points, surge arrester earth conductors, cable sealing end earth connections, and neutral earthing resistor (NER) connections. These are typically heavy-gauge (2–6 mm) tags with M8–M12 bolt holes. Embossed or engraved with equipment reference, voltage level, and date of installation. Tin-plated for long service life in outdoor substations. Comply with IEC 60076 (transformers) and IEC 61936-1 (power installations) earthing marking requirements.
Copper Equipotential Bonding Identification Tags
Copper equipotential bonding tags, copper MEB (main equipotential bonding) labels, copper supplementary bonding markers, and copper SPE (supplementary protective earth) tags are fitted at bonding connection points in buildings, industrial facilities, hospitals, and data centres. They identify the bonded service (water pipe, gas pipe, structural steel, lightning protection conductor) and the bonding conductor size. These comply with IEC 60364-5-54 and BS 7671 Chapter 54 requirements for equipotential bonding identification.

Marking and Identification Options
Copper earthing tags can be supplied with embossed IEC earth symbol (⏚, IEC 60417-5019), embossed text (PE, EARTH, GND, ERDE), engraved circuit references, stamped alphanumeric codes, and laser-marked text. Custom dies are made for batch orders with repeating text. For one-off or variable marking, laser engraving is used without tooling cost. Tags are marked on one or both faces. Marking depth is sufficient for long-term legibility even after in-service oxidation or cleaning. Tin plating after marking maintains marking visibility.
Attachment and Fixing Methods
Attachment options include: punched round hole (M4–M8) for bolt fixing to busbar or lug; elongated slot for cable strap wrapping; tee-bar profile for cable lug notch fitting; loop form for cable wrapping without tools; flat flag with adhesive backing for temporary labelling (copper foil type). Standard round hole is the most common for permanent switchgear installation. Tee-bar tags are preferred for cable lugs where a separate fastener is not convenient. Loop and flag forms are used for cable bundles in cable tunnels and racks.
Size Range and Thickness
Standard tag sizes: 10×20 mm, 12×25 mm, 15×30 mm, 20×40 mm, 25×50 mm. Custom sizes to drawing. Thickness: 0.5 mm (flexible, for wrapping), 1.0 mm (standard), 1.5 mm (heavy duty for substation bolted connection), 2.0–3.0 mm (transformer/NER connection). Strip width and blank dimensions are supplied to ±0.2 mm. Hole position tolerance is ±0.1 mm from datum edge.
Material and Plating Durability
Cu-ETP copper base material ensures compatibility with copper conductors and lug materials, eliminating galvanic corrosion at the tag-conductor interface. Tin plating (3–10 μm electrodeposited) prevents oxidation and maintains bright appearance for in-service readability. For outdoor substations, hot-dip tinning (15–25 μm) or silver plating (5–15 μm) is specified. Bare copper tags are supplied where immediate assembly is confirmed and a sealed enclosure prevents oxidation.
Compliance and Documentation
Copper earthing tags are manufactured and documented per IEC 60445 (identification), IEC 60446 (conductor identification), IEC 60417 (graphical symbols), BS 7671 Appendix 7, and DIN 46433. Material conformance per ASTM B187 and BS EN 13601. CE and REACH/RoHS compliance declarations provided. EN 10204 Type 3.1 material test certificates for substation and power utility procurement.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the IEC symbol for an earth connection tag?
The IEC earth (ground) symbol is defined in IEC 60417-5019 and depicted as three horizontal lines decreasing in length below a vertical line (⏚). This symbol is embossed or engraved on copper earthing tags to indicate a protective earth connection. The “PE” text designation may also be used per IEC 60445.
What thickness of copper tag is recommended for substation use?
For substations and outdoor installations, 1.5–3.0 mm copper tags with M8 or M10 bolt holes are recommended. This thickness withstands the mechanical stress of conductor clamping torques and provides structural rigidity for long-term outdoor installation. Tin plating of 10–25 μm is specified for corrosion resistance.
Can the tags be supplied with custom circuit reference numbers?
Yes. Custom text, circuit numbers, and alphanumeric codes are engraved or stamped on request. For batch orders with a consistent reference, custom embossing dies are made. For variable references within a batch, laser engraving is used without tooling cost.
What attachment methods are available?
Round hole (M4–M8) for bolt fixing, elongated slot for cable strap, tee-bar notch for lug attachment, loop form for cable wrapping, and adhesive-backed copper foil tags. The most common is the round hole tag fixed alongside the earth lug bolt or under the nut.
Are copper earthing tags compatible with copper cable lugs?
Yes. Copper tags are fully compatible with copper cable lugs, eliminating galvanic corrosion. Both the tag and lug are Cu-ETP copper; the same bolt torque values apply. Where aluminium lugs are used, copper tags are still preferred as the tag only contacts the bolt and washer, not the aluminium lug face.
What is the minimum order quantity?
Standard blank tags: 100 pieces minimum. Custom engraved/embossed tags: 500 pieces minimum per text reference. Prototype samples: 10–25 pieces available for qualification.
Are the tags RoHS and REACH compliant?
Yes. Cu-ETP copper is a pure metal, inherently REACH and RoHS compliant. Tin plating is a non-restricted substance. REACH SVHC declaration and RoHS compliance certificate are provided with each shipment.
Can copper earthing tags be supplied pre-attached to cable lugs?
Yes. Tags can be supplied pre-fitted to cable lugs using the lug bolt, as a sub-assembly. This is useful for panel assembly line kitting where identified earth connections are built into the lug kit. Specify lug type, conductor size, and tag marking when ordering.
