C84400 Leaded Red Brass Casting

C84400 Leaded Red Brass Casting

C84400 (UNS C84400, CDA 844, Leaded Red Brass) is an intermediate-composition leaded brass casting alloy containing approximately 80% copper, 9% zinc, 3% lead, and 3% tin. Positioned between LG2 red brass (C83600) and standard yellow brass (C85700), C84400 offers a balance of good corrosion resistance, high machinability, and moderate cost, making it widely used for plumbing hardware, gas fittings, valves, and general commercial castings where maximum dezincification resistance is not required but service in water and gas environments is expected.

Alloy Overview

C84400 (78–82% Cu) has sufficient copper content to resist dezincification in most municipal water supply conditions. The 2.5–3.5% lead content provides high machinability (80%+ CDA rating), enabling rapid CNC production of threaded fittings and complex valve bodies. The 2.0–3.5% tin addition improves pressure tightness and corrosion resistance in water service. Tensile strength is 230 MPa (sand cast), adequate for PN16–PN25 fitting applications.
