C86300 Manganese Bronze Casting

C86300 Manganese Bronze Casting

C86300 (UNS C86300, CDA 863, Manganese Bronze, Grade C High Tensile Brass) is the highest-strength commercial brass casting alloy, achieving tensile strengths of 620–690 MPa with yield strengths of 310 MPa. The high manganese (2.5–5.0%) and aluminium (0.5–1.5%) content, combined with iron additions (2.0–4.0%), creates a heavily strengthened alpha-beta microstructure. C86300 is specified for the most demanding structural brass casting applications: large marine propellers, heavy worm wheels, high-load slide bearings, and structural marine hardware subject to shock loading.

Alloy Overview

C86300 achieves its exceptional strength through multi-element solid solution and precipitation hardening in the beta phase. The high Mn and Al additions produce intermetallic precipitates that substantially increase yield strength. At 620 MPa UTS, C86300 exceeds many medium-carbon steels while offering the inherent advantages of brass: non-magnetic, corrosion resistant, and directly castable into complex shapes. The high alloy content reduces machinability to approximately 8% CDA – carbide tooling is essential.
