Copper Lay In Lugs
Copper Lay-In Lugs

Copper Lay-In Lugs from Electrical Accessories India are open-barrel, tool-optional terminal connectors manufactured from Electrolytic Tough Pitch (ETP) copper conforming to IS 1897 / C11000 (99.9% Cu). The lay-in design allows conductors to be placed from the top without threading through a barrel, significantly reducing installation time in transformer secondary terminals, busbar risers, switchgear assemblies, and motor control centres (MCC). A captive fastener or set-screw secures the conductor after seating, delivering a gas-tight, low-resistance connection.
What Are Copper Lay-In Lugs?
Lay-in lugs — also called open-barrel lugs or saddle lugs — differ from conventional tubular lugs by having a U-shaped or slotted conductor channel that is open at the top. The wire is laid in from above and clamped with a bolt rather than requiring the conductor to be inserted axially into a closed barrel. This makes them the preferred choice when working in confined panel spaces, or when conductors are too stiff to bend into alignment with a standard barrel lug.
Electrical Accessories India manufactures lay-in lugs for conductor sizes from 16 mm² to 400 mm² (AWG 6 to 750 kcmil equivalent) with tongue hole sizes from M6 to M16, covering the full range required for LV switchboards (up to 1100 V AC / 1500 V DC).

- Standards: Manufactured to IS 8309, BS 4579 / BS EN 46235, IEC 61238-1 compatible dimensions
- Finish: Bright copper or tin-plated; smooth tongue face for flush busbar contact
Applications
Copper lay-in lugs from Electrical Accessories India are used across a wide range of electrical and industrial applications:
- Transformer secondary terminals: Fast re-termination of heavy conductors at LV output bushings without disturbing the winding connections
- Busbars and busbar risers: Bolted connections to copper or aluminium busbars in LV switchboards and distribution boards
- Switchgear and MCCs: Cable terminations inside draw-out compartments where axial insertion is impractical
- Earthing and bonding: Main earthing terminals (MET), protective earth (PE) conductors, and equipotential bonding bars
- Solar / PV installations: DC string and array cable terminations at inverter terminals
- Generator sets: Output terminal connections requiring quick cable changes during servicing
- Marine and offshore panels: Tin-plated variant resists salt-spray corrosion in maritime environments
Manufacturing & Quality
All lay-in lugs are machined or precision-stamped at our Jamnagar facility from certified ETP copper rod and sheet stock. Each batch undergoes:
- Dimensional inspection to drawing tolerances (±0.1 mm on tongue thickness and hole position)
- Conductivity verification ≥ 99% IACS by eddy-current testing
- Contact resistance testing per IEC 61238-1 protocol
- Salt-spray test (72 h, 5% NaCl) for tin-plated variants
- Visual and surface-finish inspection before packing
Material test certificates (MTC), dimensional inspection reports, and RoHS compliance declarations are available on request.
