IS 318 HTB4 High Tensile Brass Casting – Grade 4
IS 318 HTB4 (High Tensile Brass Grade 4) is the highest-strength brass casting grade in IS 318, directly equivalent to C86300 (USA) and CC766S (EN 1982). With tensile strength of 620–690 MPa achieved through very high manganese (2.5–5.0%), aluminium (0.5–1.5%), and iron (2.0–4.0%) additions, IS 318 HTB4 is specified for the most demanding structural marine and heavy engineering applications in the Indian market: large ship propellers, heavy worm wheels, high-load bearings, and offshore structural hardware.
Alloy Overview
IS 318 HTB4 achieves its exceptional 620 MPa tensile strength through the same multi-element precipitation hardening mechanism as C86300/CC766S: heavy alloying with Mn, Al, and Fe creates a predominantly beta phase microstructure with extensive intermetallic precipitation, producing the highest strength available in any commercial brass casting grade. Machinability is very low (8% CDA) and all machining requires carbide or CBN tooling with careful coolant management.
