C89550 Bismuth Brass Casting – Lead-Free Eco Brass
C89550 Bismuth Brass Casting – Lead-Free Eco Brass
C89550 (UNS C89550, Bismuth Brass, Eco Brass) is a lead-free brass casting alloy where bismuth (0.5–1.5%) replaces lead as the machinability-enhancing agent. Bismuth performs the same chip-breaking function as lead in the microstructure – dispersing as fine particles that produce short, broken chips during machining – while being classified as non-toxic and non-restricted under RoHS, NSF/ANSI 61, California AB1953, and EU Drinking Water Directive. C89550 is the premium lead-free alternative for high-volume machined castings requiring production economics comparable to traditional leaded brass.
Alloy Overview
C89550’s bismuth content (0.5–1.5%) produces machinability of 70–80% CDA – substantially higher than silicon brass (40–50%) and approaching the 80–90% of traditional leaded yellow brass. This makes C89550 the preferred eco-brass grade for CNC-machined valve bodies, fittings, and precision hardware components where the machining productivity must not be significantly compromised by the lead-free transition. The alloy complies with all major lead-free water contact regulations globally.
