C86500 Manganese Bronze Casting – High Tensile Brass Casting

C86500 Manganese Bronze Casting – High Tensile Brass Casting

C86500 (UNS C86500, CDA 865, Manganese Bronze / High Tensile Brass, EN CC765S / CuZn37Mn3Al2, IS 318 HTB1) is the most widely used high-tensile brass casting alloy for marine propellers, pump impellers, bearings, and heavy structural components. With tensile strength of 490–550 MPa and hardness of 100–130 HB, C86500 is an industry standard for seagoing vessels, offshore equipment, and industrial machinery requiring the strength of steel with the corrosion resistance and machinability advantages of brass.

Alloy Overview

C86500 achieves tensile strengths approximately twice that of standard yellow brass through its complex alloy chemistry: the 55–60% copper with balance zinc creates a predominantly beta-phase microstructure, strengthened by Mn (0.5–3.0%), Al (0.5–2.0%), Fe (0.4–2.0%), and Ni (up to 1.0%) additions. The result is a versatile high-strength brass suitable for both sand casting (large propellers, pump casings) and gravity die casting (smaller fittings and hardware).
