C86200 Manganese Bronze Casting – High Tensile Brass
C86200 (UNS C86200, CDA 862, High Tensile Brass, Manganese Bronze) is a high-strength copper-zinc-manganese-aluminium casting alloy with tensile strength of 490–550 MPa – comparable to medium carbon steel and far exceeding standard yellow brass. Used for marine propellers, pump impellers, worm wheels, slide bearings, hydraulic cylinder bodies, and heavy structural hardware, C86200 is the standard grade for applications requiring high strength and adequate corrosion resistance in industrial and marine environments.
Alloy Overview
C86200 achieves its high strength through: higher zinc content (32–37%) creating alpha-beta duplex microstructure; manganese (0.5–1.5%) and aluminium (0.5–1.5%) additions that further strengthen the beta phase through solid-solution hardening and precipitation hardening on ageing. The result is tensile strength of 490 MPa (sand cast), yield strength of 180 MPa, and hardness of 100–130 HB. Elongation is 18% – adequate for structural components. The higher alloying content reduces machinability to approximately 26% CDA (vs 100% for free-cutting brass).

Applications
C86200 castings are specified for: marine propellers (small to medium craft); pump impellers and volute casings in industrial water service; worm wheels, gear blanks, and power transmission components; slide bearings and sleeve bearings for moderate-load applications; hydraulic valve bodies and cylinder end caps; structural marine hardware (bollards, cleats, windlass components, anchor windlasses); and heavy engineering castings where high strength combined with non-magnetic properties and good corrosion resistance is required.
