Silicon Bronze Studs

Silicon Bronze Studs

Electrical Accessories India manufactures silicon bronze studs and stud bolts in C65100 and C65500 alloys for marine, offshore, transformer, power utility, chemical plant, and corrosive environment electrical applications. Silicon bronze studs are fully threaded rods (threaded both ends with unthreaded mid-section, or all-thread) designed for permanent installation in tapped equipment housings, transformer terminals, flange connections, equipment base mounting, earthing electrode connections, and bushing assemblies. Their outstanding corrosion resistance in seawater, buried soil, and chemical atmospheres, combined with non-sparking and non-magnetic properties, makes silicon bronze studs the benchmark material for critical electrical studs in high-corrosion service environments.

Product Overview

Stud Bolt Types – DIN 938, DIN 939, All-Thread

Three primary stud configurations are manufactured: (1) DIN 938 (short thread, equal thread both ends): thread length = 1 × diameter on both ends, plain shank centre – used for screwing into tapped equipment castings where the thread engages a steel or bronze tapped hole; (2) DIN 939 (long thread, unequal thread both ends): one end thread length = 1.25–2 × diameter (equipment engagement end), other end thread = 1 × diameter (nut engagement end) – used for flange bolting and equipment base fixing; (3) All-thread stud (fully threaded rod, UDL stud): thread along full length – used for earth electrode couplers, busbar stud connections, adjustable-length assemblies, and where bolt length selection post-installation is required.

Transformer Bushing Stud Applications

Silicon bronze studs are specified by transformer OEMs for: HV bushing terminal connection studs, LV terminal bar connection studs, neutral terminal studs, transformer tank cover studs (oil-tight flange connections), radiator manifold studs, buchholz relay pipe connection studs, and bushing bolt studs in conservator tank covers. The use of silicon bronze instead of steel in transformer oil environments prevents iron contamination of transformer oil (which accelerates insulating oil degradation) and avoids rusting at oil-immersed flange interfaces that could compromise the oil-tightness of the transformer tank. Silicon bronze studs are compatible with transformer oil (IEC 60296 mineral oil).

Earthing System Stud Applications

In electrical earthing systems, silicon bronze all-thread studs and stud bolts are used for: earth electrode coupling studs (joining copper-bonded earth rods in deep-drive applications), earthing conductor connection studs in concrete foundations, earth bus bar extension studs in distribution substations, equipment earth lug studs on transformer tanks, cable gland earth studs on panel sheets, and bonding conductor terminal studs on overhead line towers. In IEC 62305 and IS 3043 compliant earthing systems, non-ferrous materials are preferred throughout the buried/immersed section to eliminate galvanic corrosion at metal-to-soil interfaces.

Marine and Offshore Stud Applications

Silicon bronze studs in marine applications include: engine foundation studs (where sea water bilge exposure makes ferrous studs unsuitable), propeller shaft earthing studs, impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system anode connection studs, deck fitting connection studs for navigation light and antenna bases, hull skin-fitting studs for sea cock assemblies, anchor windlass base studs, generator foundation studs, and bonding cable terminal studs. On offshore platforms, silicon bronze studs are used for: wellhead bonding hardware, ATEX junction box mounting studs, topsides equipment base connection studs, and fired heater earthing studs in hazardous areas.

Chemical Plant Stud Applications

In chemical and petrochemical plants, silicon bronze studs are specified for: flange joint studs in non-ferrous process piping (copper, titanium, Hastelloy), equipment bonding studs on reactor vessels, pump base mounting studs in corrosive environments, non-sparking requirements in explosive-atmosphere process areas, process vessel earthing studs, and instrumentation bracket mounting studs in aggressive process atmospheres containing H₂S, SO₂, Cl₂, or HF vapours. Silicon bronze C65500 is resistant to most organic solvents, dilute mineral acids, and alkalis encountered in chemical process plant environments.

Flange Stud Bolts for Process Equipment

Silicon bronze stud bolts (DIN 939 profile) for ANSI/ASME B16.5 and EN 1092 flange connections in non-ferrous process piping are available in ASME/ANSI stud bolt format: B7 stud equivalent dimensions but in C65500 silicon bronze material. Full thread length per ASME B18.31.2 (standard stud lengths for 150# through 2500# flanges in sizes 1″ to 24″ pipe). Used in copper, cupronickel, and titanium-lined vessels requiring non-ferrous flange hardware to prevent galvanic attack at stud-to-flange contact.

All-Thread Rods (Fully Threaded Silicon Bronze Studs)

Silicon bronze all-thread rods (threaded full length) are produced in M4–M36 and 1/4″–1-1/2″ in standard lengths (1 m, 2 m, 3 m) or cut-to-length to customer specification. Used for: adjustable-length earth electrode couplers, tensioned earthing bus connections, cable support hangers, conduit support rods, and overhead line vibration damper connection hardware. Cut lengths from all-thread rods simplify field inventory and allow cut-to-fit installation without pre-measured stud lengths.

Pricing

Silicon bronze studs are priced at USD 14.90 per kilogram (EXW Jamnagar, India). Custom lengths, thread combinations, and special profiles manufactured to drawing. MOQ: 10 kg per configuration.

Corrosion Resistance in Buried Earthing Applications

Silicon bronze C65500 studs buried in soil (all soil types, including clay, sandy, waterlogged, and aggressive sulphate/chloride soils) maintain structural integrity and electrical conductivity for 30+ years. This long service life is critical in earthing systems where stud replacement would require excavation of concrete foundations or buried earthing mats—effectively a lifetime service item. Comparative corrosion rates in soil (mpy = mils per year): silicon bronze C65500 ≈ 0.3–1.2 mpy, hot-dip galvanised steel ≈ 1–8 mpy depending on soil aggressivity, bare mild steel ≈ 5–30 mpy. Silicon bronze provides 5–25× lower corrosion rate than steel alternatives.

Dimensional Accuracy and Thread Quality

All silicon bronze studs are produced with thread tolerance 6g (external) per ISO 965. Thread form is verified with calibrated ring gauges (GO/NO-GO) per ISO 1502. Concentricity of thread on both ends relative to shank centreline is checked by CMM for precision applications (transformer bushing studs, flange stud bolts). Length is verified with gauges at ±0.5 mm tolerance for standard studs; ±0.2 mm for precision transformer and instrument studs. Surface finish: Ra ≤ 3.2 µm on shank, thread flanks per standard finish for the alloy.

Compatibility with Earthing System Components

Silicon bronze studs are designed for use with the complete Electrical Accessories India silicon bronze fastener family: silicon bronze hex nuts, silicon bronze flanged nuts, silicon bronze bolts, and silicon bronze hex flanged bolts. Using all-silicon-bronze fastener hardware in an earthing system or marine electrical assembly creates a galvanically homogeneous assembly with no inter-metal corrosion, maximum reliability, and lowest inspection/maintenance requirement over the system life.

Manufacturing Process

Silicon bronze studs are manufactured by CNC thread rolling or CNC turning + thread rolling from silicon bronze round bar. Thread rolling (preferred for M6 and above) produces stronger threads with surface work hardening versus cut threads, and improved dimensional consistency. For miniature studs (M4–M6), Swiss-type CNC lathes produce the stud from hexagonal or round bar with single-setup precision. For ASME flange stud bolts (large diameter, precision-length), centreless-ground blanks are thread-rolled both ends to achieve tight length and thread concentricity tolerances. All studs are measured for length, thread pitch, and thread GO/NO-GO per ISO 1502 gauging. Chemical analysis per heat is supplied with EN 10204 3.1 MTR.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is the difference between a stud bolt and an all-thread stud?

A stud bolt (DIN 938/939) has an unthreaded plain shank in the middle, with threads only at both ends. This provides a shear-free centre shank that carries bending loads better. An all-thread stud (fully threaded rod) has thread along its entire length, providing flexibility in nut placement position and used where the full length may be engaged in an oversized tapped hole or where adjustable connection length is required.

2. Are silicon bronze studs compatible with transformer mineral oil (IEC 60296)?

Yes. Silicon bronze C65500 is fully compatible with mineral transformer oil (naphthenic and paraffinic base, per IEC 60296). The alloy does not degrade oil quality, does not suffer oil-induced corrosion, and does not introduce iron or zinc ions that could catalyse oil oxidation. This is a key advantage over galvanised steel studs which can introduce zinc ions into transformer oil.

3. Can silicon bronze studs be used in ATEX Zone 1 hazardous areas?

Yes. Silicon bronze is a non-sparking material approved for use in ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 classified areas under ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU Group II, Categories 2 and 3. Material compliance declarations for ATEX applications are available on request.

4. What is the maximum length of silicon bronze all-thread studs you can supply?

All-thread silicon bronze rods up to 3 metres in length are standard. Longer lengths (up to 6 m) can be produced in larger diameters (M16 and above) – contact us for feasibility. For most applications, 1 m and 2 m lengths are practical and available.

5. How are silicon bronze studs priced?

USD 14.90 per kilogram (EXW Jamnagar). Price is per weight of finished stud; longer and heavier studs cost more per piece but remain at the same per-kilogram price. Volume and project pricing available for quantities above 100 kg.

6. What torque should be applied to M16 silicon bronze stud nuts?

For M16 C65500 silicon bronze stud with DIN 934 nut: typical tightening torque 60–90 Nm (clean, lightly oiled). For transformer flange connections, always follow transformer OEM torque specification for the specific flange gasket type and service pressure. Over-torquing can cause stud fracture in the softer silicon bronze alloy.

7. Do you supply silicon bronze studs for wind turbine foundation earthing?

Yes. Silicon bronze all-thread studs M16–M30 in 1 m and 2 m lengths are commonly used for wind turbine foundation earthing connections and tower bonding systems. We supply these to wind farm EPC contractors and foundation contractors for Baltic, North Sea, and Asian offshore wind projects.

8. Can silicon bronze studs be welded or brazed?

C65500 High Silicon Bronze is weldable by MIG/TIG using ERCuSi-A filler wire (AWS A5.7). Brazing with silver alloy (BCuP or BAg series) is also possible. This allows permanent welded stud connections for earthing mats and marine hull connections. C65100 is also weldable with the same filler wire.
