C26800 Brass Stamped Parts – Yellow Brass Stampings
C26800 brass (UNS C26800, CDA 268, Yellow Brass, EN CW506L, DIN CuZn33, IS 407 Grade 3) is a commercial-grade yellow brass strip alloy containing 66–68.5% copper and 31.5–34% zinc. Widely used as a cost-effective alternative to C26000 (Cartridge Brass) for stampings that require good formability without the most severe deep-drawing demands, C26800 Yellow Brass offers an excellent balance of cold-formability, moderate tensile strength, good corrosion resistance, and competitive pricing due to its lower copper content. Electrical Accessories India manufactures C26800 Yellow Brass stampings at our Jamnagar, Gujarat facility, supplying electrical hardware manufacturers, switchgear OEMs, panel board builders, and hardware distributors across India and international markets.
Product Overview
C26800 Alloy Profile – Metallurgy of Yellow Brass
C26800 (Yellow Brass, 67/33 brass) is an alpha-phase brass containing 66–68.5% copper and 31.5–34% zinc, with trace impurities of lead (max 0.07%) and iron (max 0.05%). The higher zinc content compared to C26000 gives C26800 slightly higher strength in the annealed condition (tensile strength 310–380 MPa, elongation 45–60%) but marginally lower deep-drawability and ductility. The alloy remains fully alpha-phase at the C26800 composition, maintaining good cold-formability and resistance to season cracking. Electrical conductivity is approximately 25–27% IACS – marginally lower than C26000 due to the higher zinc content. Density is approximately 8.47 g/cm³. The lower copper content (2–3% less than C26000) results in a modest cost reduction per kilogram of strip, which at high stamping volumes represents a meaningful material cost saving without significant sacrifice of formability.
Stamping Capabilities and Applications
C26800 Yellow Brass strip is well-suited for blanking, piercing, bending, and moderate forming operations using progressive dies and compound dies. Applications include: flat-blanked earth tags and grounding washers; terminal plates and bus links for LV panels; connector and terminal block components requiring blanking and simple bending; decorative hardware stampings including escutcheons, switch plates, and cover blanks in polished or lacquered finish; electrical contact blades for low-severity forming; spring clips and retaining clips for panel assembly; and cable entry blanks. For applications requiring draw ratios above 1.8 or multi-stage deep drawing, C26000 is preferred; for moderate-severity drawing (LDR up to 2.5 with appropriate tooling), C26800 performs adequately and offers a material cost advantage.
Yellow Brass in Electrical Hardware
C26800 Yellow Brass is extensively used in the electrical hardware sector for components where the combination of a bright golden appearance, adequate conductivity, and cost-competitive pricing is important. Typical electrical hardware stampings in C26800 include: consumer wiring accessory components (socket face plates, plug contact blades, switch rockers); panel board terminal components; fuse carrier contacts; earth continuity links and bonding straps; cable bracket stampings; and busbar spacer blanks. The alloy’s excellent surface finish when polished and its compatibility with nickel, tin, and decorative chrome plating make it a preferred substrate for visible architectural hardware and consumer electrical fittings requiring a premium appearance at competitive cost.
Formability and Process Parameters
For progressive die stamping of C26800 Yellow Brass strip, Electrical Accessories India applies the following standard process parameters: strip thickness 0.3–3.0 mm; draw ratio up to 2.5 (first draw, annealed strip); bending radius minimum 0.5× material thickness for 90° bends in half-hard temper; blanking clearance 4–6% per side of material thickness; press speed 80–400 strokes/minute depending on part geometry and strip thickness. Lubrication with mineral-oil-based press lubricant or synthetic stamping oil is standard. Annealing between draw stages is recommended for C26800 when total true strain exceeds 0.8. Spring-back on C26800 is predictable and consistent, allowing accurate compensation in die design for bent and formed profiles.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the difference between C26800 and C26000?
C26800 (Yellow Brass, ~67% Cu) has 2–3% less copper than C26000 (Cartridge Brass, 70% Cu). C26000 offers better deep-drawability and slightly higher ductility. C26800 is adequate for blanking, piercing, bending, and moderate drawing, and costs slightly less per kilogram due to the lower copper content.
2. Why is C26800 called Yellow Brass?
The term “Yellow Brass” refers to the characteristic bright yellow colour of 65–70% copper brass alloys. As zinc content increases beyond ~20%, the alloy colour shifts from reddish (red brass, gilding metal) toward yellow-gold. C26800 with ~67% copper has a distinct warm yellow colour that makes it attractive for decorative hardware applications.
3. Is C26800 suitable for tin plating?
Yes. C26800 accepts electrolytic tin plating (ASTM B545) with standard pre-treatment (degreasing, acid activation, copper or nickel strike). Tin-plated C26800 earth tags and terminal components are a standard product of Electrical Accessories India.
4. Can C26800 be used for spring contact applications?
Yes, in hard temper (H04, ASTM B36). Hard-temper C26800 achieves tensile strength of 430–500 MPa with sufficient elongation for spring-forming. For more demanding spring applications (high-cycle fatigue, high contact force), C26000 hard temper or phosphor bronze (C51000) is preferred.
5. What secondary operations are available on C26800 stampings?
In-house: tapping, thread rolling, deburring, ultrasonic cleaning, sub-assembly. Through certified partners: nickel plating, tin plating, silver plating, chrome plating, polishing, and lacquering. All plating is XRF-verified for thickness.
