Product Overview
What Are PVC Cable Gland Shrouds?
A PVC shroud (also called a cable gland hood, protective boot, cable entry shroud, or gland cover) is a flexible conical or cylindrical sleeve that fits over the cable tail of a cable gland, creating a smooth, weatherproof transition between the gland body and the cable outer sheath. The shroud prevents the ingress of water, dust, and contaminants at the cable-to-gland interface, supplements IP54 to IP68 protection, and protects the cable sheath from mechanical chafing, UV degradation, and chemical attack. Related components used with PVC shrouds include: cable gland bodies, brass lock nuts, earth tags, sealing washers, thread reducers, stopping plugs, and backnut assemblies. Shrouds are particularly important in outdoor switchgear, marine junction boxes, pump control panels, and cable ladder entry points.
PVC Material Properties and Compound Grades
Our PVC shrouds are manufactured from high-quality PVC compounds specifically formulated for electrical accessory applications. The material conforms to IEC 60684-2 (flexible insulating sleeving) and BS EN 50085 material requirements. Key material properties include: tensile strength ≥15 MPa, elongation at break ≥200%, Shore A hardness 65–80, operating temperature range -20°C to +70°C (standard grade) or -40°C to +90°C (low-temperature grade), UV stabilisation for outdoor service, flame retardance per IEC 60332-1 (halogen-containing) or LSZH grades per IEC 60754-1, and RoHS compliance. Anti-fungal grades conforming to IEC 60068-2-10 are available for tropical and high-humidity installations.
Dimensional Range and Size Coverage
PVC shrouds are sized to match the cable gland they protect. Our standard range covers metric gland sizes from M16 (for cables approximately 4–10 mm OD) through M90 (for cables approximately 60–80 mm OD), with 1.5 mm pitch thread sizing. For NPT-threaded gland systems, equivalent shrouds are available for 1/4″ through 2″ NPT. The shroud internal bore is matched to the gland cable entry range, and the overall length is standardised at 40–120 mm depending on gland size to provide adequate cable sheath coverage and UV protection zone. Custom lengths are available for armoured cables and special cable constructions.
Colour Options and Identification
Standard PVC shrouds are supplied in grey (RAL 7001) as the default colour for general industrial use. The following colour options are available as standard: black (UV stabilised, for outdoor and direct sunlight applications), red (for high-voltage or hazardous circuit identification), blue (for instrumentation and signal circuits), yellow (for safety circuits), orange (for ATEX or intrinsically safe wiring), and natural/translucent (for inspection purposes). Custom RAL colours are available for OEM and large project orders. Colour coding helps field technicians quickly identify cable circuit types during installation, maintenance, and fault-finding operations.
Sealing and IP Rating Enhancement
PVC shrouds are an important accessory for improving the ingress protection (IP) of cable gland assemblies per IEC 60529. In exposed outdoor or marine installations, the shroud provides supplementary sealing at the cable tail where water tracking along the cable outer sheath could bypass the primary cable gland seal. When correctly installed with a compatible cable gland, shroud-fitted assemblies can achieve IP66 to IP68 ratings depending on the gland type and installation method. The shroud also provides additional protection for cable sheath materials (PVC, XLPE, rubber, armoured) against UV-induced brittleness, ozone cracking, and surface contamination.
Flame Retardance and Low Smoke Options
For applications in enclosed spaces, tunnels, railways, data centres, and marine vessels where fire safety is critical, LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) PVC shroud grades are available. These compounds conform to IEC 60754-1 (halogen content), IEC 61034-2 (smoke density), and IEC 60332-3 (flame propagation). LSZH shrouds emit minimal toxic gases and dense smoke when exposed to fire, protecting evacuation routes and limiting damage to adjacent equipment. Standard PVC shrouds comply with IEC 60332-1 (single vertical wire flame test) and are suitable for general industrial fire safety requirements.
Compatibility and Installation
PVC shrouds from Electrical Accessories India are designed to be compatible with all standard cable gland body profiles conforming to IEC 62444 and BS 6121. The shroud is simply pushed over the cable before the cable gland is installed, and then slid back over the gland cable entry tail after the gland is fully tightened. No adhesive or special tools are required for installation. For permanent or submersible installations, the shroud can be secured with a cable tie at the cable end, or self-amalgamating tape may be applied over the shroud-to-cable junction to achieve IP68 rating.

UV and Weathering Resistance
UV-stabilised PVC shrouds retain their mechanical properties and flexibility after extended outdoor exposure. UV stabilisation is achieved using hindered amine light stabilisers (HALS) and carbon black pigment (in black variants). Accelerated weathering tests per ISO 4892-2 (xenon arc) confirm retention of tensile strength ≥85% and elongation ≥150% after 2,000 hours of UV exposure equivalent to 5–7 years of outdoor service in tropical climates. This makes black PVC shrouds the preferred choice for rooftop solar installations, outdoor substations, coastal switchgear, and overhead cable entry points.
Chemical and Oil Resistance
PVC shrouds demonstrate good resistance to mineral oils, diesel fuel, hydraulic fluids, dilute acids, and alkalis encountered in industrial environments. This makes them suitable for motor terminal boxes, pump control panels, compressor junction boxes, and oil & gas field installations. Chemical resistance data is available on request, covering common industrial solvents, cleaning agents, and process chemicals. For aggressive chemical environments involving ketones, esters, or concentrated acids, EPDM rubber shrouds may be more appropriate — consult our technical team.
Flexible and Low-Temperature Performance
Standard PVC shrouds remain flexible at temperatures down to -20°C, allowing installation and maintenance in cold climates without risk of cracking or splitting. Low-temperature grade PVC (plasticised with speciality plasticisers) extends this to -40°C, suitable for sub-Arctic installations, cold-store environments, and LNG/cryogenic plant electrical systems. The low-temperature grade is tested per IEC 60068-2-1 (cold exposure test) and IEC 60068-2-14 (thermal shock) to verify performance.
Electrical Insulation Properties
PVC shrouds provide electrical insulation at the cable-to-gland interface, preventing accidental contact with live conductors during installation and maintenance. Dielectric strength of the shroud PVC compound is ≥20 kV/mm per IEC 60243-1, with volume resistivity ≥10¹² Ω·cm per IEC 60093. This insulation property is important for protection against touch voltage hazards, particularly in medium-voltage (MV) cable entry assemblies.
ATEX and Hazardous Area Use
PVC shrouds are non-sparking, non-magnetic materials and are suitable for use in ATEX Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 21, and Zone 22 hazardous locations when used with certified cable glands. The shroud does not affect the Ex certification of the cable gland assembly, as it is an external protective component and does not form part of the flameproof enclosure. ATEX-compliant orange-coloured shrouds are available for visual identification of hazardous area wiring per IEC 60079-14 good practice guidance.
Compliance with Cable Gland Standards
PVC shrouds are compatible with cable glands conforming to IEC 62444, BS 6121, and EN 50262. They complement our full range of Cable Glands Accessories including Brass Lock Nuts, Stainless Steel Lock Nuts, Earth Tags Brass, Brass Stop Plugs, and Thread Reducers and Adapters.

Manufacturing Process
PVC shrouds are manufactured using the following production sequence at our Jamnagar facility:
- Compound Preparation: PVC resin is blended with plasticisers, stabilisers, UV inhibitors, flame retardants, and pigments in a high-intensity mixer. Compound formulation verified by laboratory test for Shore hardness, tensile strength, and elongation.
- Injection Moulding / Compression Moulding: The PVC compound is processed on injection moulding machines with precision tooling to produce shrouds with consistent wall thickness, bore dimensions, and surface finish.
- Trimming and Deflashing: Moulded shrouds are trimmed to remove flash using hand tools and tumble deflashing machines. Edge quality inspected for sharpness or irregularities.
- Dimensional Inspection: Internal bore, OD, and length measured using calibrated gauges. Bore concentricity verified. Wall thickness measured at 4 points using ultrasonic gauges.
- Material Testing: Samples from each production batch are tested for tensile strength, elongation at break, Shore hardness, and flame retardance per relevant IEC standards.
- Packing and Traceability: Shrouds are packed in polybag-lined boxes with size, colour, grade, batch number, and quantity labelled. Bulk packaging on pallets for large orders.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1. What is a PVC shroud for cable glands?
A PVC shroud is a flexible protective sleeve that slips over the cable tail of a cable gland to provide additional sealing, UV protection, and mechanical protection at the cable-to-gland interface. It supplements the IP rating of the cable gland assembly.
Q2. Are PVC shrouds suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. UV-stabilised black PVC shrouds are specifically formulated for outdoor use, retaining flexibility and mechanical properties after 2,000+ hours of UV exposure per ISO 4892-2. Grey shrouds are suitable for shaded outdoor locations or indoor use.
Q3. What is the difference between PVC and LSZH shrouds?
Standard PVC shrouds contain halogenated flame retardants that can produce dense smoke and toxic gases in a fire. LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) shrouds are formulated to produce minimal smoke and no halogen acids when burned, meeting IEC 60754-1 and IEC 61034-2 requirements for fire-critical environments.
Q4. Can PVC shrouds improve IP rating to IP68?
When combined with a compatible IP68-rated cable gland and sealed at the cable end with self-amalgamating tape, PVC shrouds can help achieve and maintain IP68 ingress protection at the cable tail interface. The shroud alone does not guarantee IP68 — the full gland assembly must be tested.
Q5. What colours are available for PVC shrouds?
Standard colours are grey (RAL 7001), black, red, blue, yellow, and orange. Translucent and custom RAL colours are available for OEM orders. Orange is commonly used for ATEX hazardous area wiring identification.
Q6. Are ATEX-rated PVC shrouds available?
PVC shrouds are non-sparking and suitable for use with ATEX-certified cable glands. The shroud does not require its own ATEX certification as it is an external protection component only. Orange ATEX identification shrouds are available per IEC 60079-14 guidance.
Q7. What is the operating temperature range?
Standard grade: -20°C to +70°C. Low-temperature grade: -40°C to +90°C. High-temperature installations requiring above +90°C should use EPDM rubber or silicone rubber shrouds — consult our technical team.
Q8. How are PVC shrouds installed?
Slide the shroud over the cable before fitting the cable gland. Once the gland is fully installed and torqued, slide the shroud back over the cable entry tail of the gland. For a permanent weatherproof seal, apply self-amalgamating tape over the shroud-cable junction.
Q9. Can I order matched sets of shrouds and lock nuts?
Yes. We supply matched sets comprising PVC shrouds, brass lock nuts or stainless steel lock nuts, and earth tags to simplify procurement for large projects.
Q10. What is the minimum order quantity for PVC shrouds?
MOQ for standard grey or black PVC shrouds in metric sizes is typically 500 pieces per size. For LSZH, coloured, or low-temperature grades, MOQ is 1,000 pieces per size. Project and OEM quantities below standard MOQ can be discussed.
