CW614N Brass Components and Parts
CW614N Brass Components and Parts
CW614N brass components and parts — also identified as EN 12164 CW614N machined parts, CuZn39Pb3 turned components, free-cutting brass components to European standard, CW614N precision parts, or high-machinability brass parts — are precision-machined components manufactured from CW614N (CuZn39Pb3) brass rod and bar in accordance with European standard EN 12164. CW614N is the dominant free-cutting brass alloy in European, UK, and global industrial applications, with a machinability index of 100 and broad adoption across electrical equipment, plumbing, instrumentation, automotive, and gas system manufacturing. Electrical Accessories India manufactures CW614N components using CNC turning centres, multi-spindle automatics, and Swiss-type lathes for OEM customers across India, Europe, the UK, the UAE, and 30+ export markets.
Product Overview
CW614N Alloy Specification
CW614N (CuZn39Pb3) per EN 12164 contains: copper 57–59%, zinc 37–42% (balance), and lead 2.5–3.5%. The lead is present as discrete particles throughout the matrix — acting as chip-breakers that produce short, free-breaking chips at high cutting speeds. This gives CW614N its machinability index of 100 — the benchmark against which all other metals and alloys are measured. The alloy also provides: good corrosion resistance in atmospheric and fresh-water environments, adequate mechanical strength (UTS 380–490 MPa), good electrical conductivity (approximately 26–28% IACS), and good solderability and brazability. It is not recommended for applications with dezincification risk (chlorinated water, soil) — CW602N (DZR brass) should be used instead.
EN 12164 Standard and CW614N Rod Forms
EN 12164 “Copper and copper alloys — Rod for free machining purposes” covers CW614N and other copper alloy grades supplied as drawn or extruded rod in diameters 3–180 mm. The standard specifies chemical composition, mechanical properties (tensile strength, hardness), dimensional tolerances, and test methods. CW614N rod is produced in four temper conditions: R360 (soft drawn, 360 MPa min UTS), R400 (medium drawn), R430 (hard drawn), and R490 (extra hard drawn). The higher tempers provide increased strength and hardness at the cost of some ductility — R400 and R430 are most common for machined parts. Electrical Accessories India uses EN 12164 certified CW614N rod from Indian primary producers with full 3.1 MTRs.
CW614N Component Types
Electrical Accessories India produces the full range of CW614N components required by electrical, plumbing, and industrial OEMs. Cable gland bodies, locknuts, and shrouds machined from CW614N hex bar are the primary product for electrical OEM customers. CW614N terminal pins, contact fingers, and connector bodies are produced for switchgear, panel board, and industrial connector manufacturers. CW614N compression fitting bodies (body, nut, front/back ferrule) are produced for instrumentation and process control supply. CW614N threaded inserts, hex spacers, and standoffs serve PCB, panel, and structural assembly requirements. CW614N valve stems, actuator bodies, and flow control components are produced for process and HVAC applications.
Machining Process for CW614N
CW614N is machined on CNC turning centres (for complex profiles and small-to-medium batches), multi-spindle automatic screw machines (for high-volume simple-to-moderate complexity parts), and Swiss-type CNC lathes (for high-precision slender parts). All processes take advantage of CW614N’s outstanding machinability: cutting speeds 200–350 m/min, feeds 0.05–0.5 mm/rev, depth of cut 0.1–5 mm. Coolant (water-soluble cutting oil) is used to prevent thermal expansion and maintain dimensional consistency. Secondary operations — tapping, cross-drilling, milling of flats, knurling, slotting — are performed in-line on live-tool lathes or as dedicated secondary operations on VMCs.
Quality Documentation for CW614N Parts
Full quality documentation is provided with every CW614N batch. Raw material: EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate from CW614N rod producer. Production: ISO 9001-compliant process records with machine ID, operator, tool batch, and inspection results. Inspection: First-Article Inspection Report (FAIR) for new parts; AQL inspection report for production batches; CMM dimensional reports for critical features; thread gauge records (100% gauging). Shipping: CoC (Certificate of Conformance), RoHS Annex II declaration, REACH SVHC declaration, certificate of origin (DGFT/FIEO), and packing list. EN 10204 3.1 or 2.2 certification available per customer requirement.
Surface Finishing and Plating Options
CW614N parts can be supplied in as-machined (natural brass) finish, or with protective/decorative surface treatments. Bright nickel plating (3–8 µm, ASTM B689) is the most common plating for electrical components — improving corrosion resistance and providing a uniform appearance. Electroless nickel plating (5–25 µm, ASTM B733) provides uniform coverage including recesses and threads. Tin plating (5–15 µm electrolytic, ASTM B545) is specified for electrical terminals to improve contact resistance and solderability. Bright chrome plating for decorative applications. Passivation (citric acid) to enhance natural oxide layer. All plating by certified partner plating shops with documented process controls.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is CW614N brass?
CW614N is the EN 12164 European designation for free-cutting brass rod containing approximately 57–59% copper, 38–40% zinc, and 2.5–3.5% lead. It is the world’s most widely used free-cutting brass alloy and the reference standard (machinability index 100) against which all other metals are benchmarked for machinability.
What is the difference between CW614N and CW617N?
CW614N (CuZn39Pb3) is optimised for machining — it has the highest lead content (3%) for maximum chip breakage and machinability. CW617N (CuZn40Pb2) has slightly higher zinc and lower lead — it is better for hot-forging and extrusion of complex profiles but marginally inferior in pure machinability. For turned parts, CW614N is preferred; for forged parts, CW617N is common.
Can CW614N be used for potable water applications?
In EU countries subject to the 4MS/WRAS potable water approval system, CW614N with high lead content may not comply with KTW/WRAS requirements for prolonged water contact. CW602N (DZR, low-lead) is the approved grade for potable water fittings in those markets. CW614N is acceptable for industrial water applications not involving potable water or human contact.
What EN standard governs CW614N bar?
EN 12164:2016 “Copper and copper alloys — Rod for free machining purposes” governs CW614N rod. EN 12165:2016 covers wrought products for general purposes. EN 12420:2015 covers forgings. The relevant standard depends on the product form.
Do you supply CW614N with 3.1 test certificates?
Yes. EN 10204 3.1 certificates from the rod mill are available on request. 3.1 certificates are issued by the producer’s own inspection department and include chemical analysis and mechanical test results for the specific heat/cast supplied. 2.2 certificates (general conformance to order) are standard; 3.1 at additional cost for the MTR.
What is the minimum CW614N part quantity?
MOQ for CW614N turned parts: 1,000–5,000 pieces for standard components; 500 pieces for complex multi-operation parts. Annual blanket orders with monthly call-offs available. Prototype samples: 10–50 pieces at sample pricing with 1–2 week lead time.
Can you supply CW614N parts with CE marking?
CE marking is a product-level compliance declaration, not a material certification. For CW614N cable glands manufactured to EN 62444 and EN 60079-0 (ATEX), Electrical Accessories India can supply CE-marked cable glands. For raw machined components, we supply the material and dimensional documentation that supports the CE marking process at the OEM product level.
