Ground Rod Pipe Clamps

Ground Rod Pipe Clamps

Ground rod pipe clamps — also called pipe grounding clamps, pipe earth clamps, or pipe bonding clamps — are bronze cast clamps that bond an earthing conductor to a metallic pipe, conduit, or structural tube within an earthing or equipotential bonding system. Manufactured by Electrical Accessories India (Jamnagar) in sizes from 1/2 inch (DN15) to 3 inch (DN80) pipe, these clamps consist of a cast bronze body joined with silicon bronze or stainless steel (SS316) clamping screws. They are used to provide main equipotential bonding to water supply pipes, gas pipes, structural steelwork, earthing conductors, and other metallic services as required by IS 732, IS 3043, BS 7671 (18th Edition), IEC 60364-5-54, and IEEE Std 80. The clamp design ensures reliable conductor-to-pipe contact without damage to pipe coatings or galvanised surfaces.

Product Overview

Design Construction and Two-Screw Mechanism

Bronze pipe grounding clamps from Electrical Accessories India are two-part cast bronze assemblies: a saddle body (lower half) that wraps the pipe OD, and a strap or upper jaw secured by two silicon bronze or SS316 hex-head screws. The two-screw design (as opposed to single-bolt) distributes clamping pressure evenly across the pipe surface, preventing pipe damage and ensuring uniform conductor contact across the full conductor channel width. The conductor channel accepts bare stranded copper conductors from 6 mm² to 120 mm² depending on clamp size. The inner face of the saddle is profiled to the pipe OD to maximise metal-to-pipe contact area and minimise contact resistance. Related terms: pipe earth clamp, pipe grounding saddle, split bolt pipe clamp, equipotential bonding clamp, structural bonding clamp, two-bolt pipe clamp.

Material: Cast Bronze with Silicon Bronze Screws

The clamp body is cast from silicon bronze (C65100/C65500) or gunmetal LG2 (CC491K / IS 318) — both alloys selected for long service life in plumbing and buried environments where brass is susceptible to dezincification. Silicon bronze (Cu-Si-Mn) resists stress-corrosion cracking and dezincification, making it the preferred material for clamps installed on water pipes, particularly copper or CPVC pipes. Gunmetal LG2 provides excellent castability for the complex saddle geometry. Clamping screws are silicon bronze (C65100) or SS316 stainless steel — both approved for direct contact with copper pipes and conductors without galvanic incompatibility. Internal surfaces are left natural as-cast or fine-machined for conductor channels. Related standards: ASTM B98, IS 318, BS EN 1982, ASTM B584.

Pipe Size Range: 1/2″ to 3″ (DN15 to DN80)

Pipe grounding clamps are catalogued by nominal pipe size (NPS) or DN (diamètre nominal) in accordance with ASME B36.10 and ISO 4200 pipe dimensions. The clamp saddle inner radius is matched to the OD of the pipe size per the standard pipe OD table — ensuring proper fitment on standard steel, copper, or GI pipes. Available sizes: 1/2″ (DN15), 3/4″ (DN20), 1″ (DN25), 1-1/4″ (DN32), 1-1/2″ (DN40), 2″ (DN50), 2-1/2″ (DN65), 3″ (DN80). Custom sizes for non-standard pipe ODs (e.g., thin-wall copper tubing or thick-wall structural pipes) are machined to customer drawing. The nominal pipe size determines the clamp saddle radius — pipe OD (not ID) is the critical dimension. Related terms: DN15 pipe clamp, DN50 pipe earth clamp, 2-inch grounding clamp, NPS 3 bonding clamp.

Conductor Channel and Bonding Conductor Compatibility

The conductor channel on the clamp body is sized to accept specific conductor cross-sections per the clamp size. Smaller clamps (1/2″–1″) typically accept 6–35 mm² conductors; medium clamps (1-1/4″–2″) accept 16–70 mm²; large clamps (2-1/2″–3″) accept 35–120 mm². The channel shape is U-profile or round to accommodate round stranded conductors. A flat tape version is available for installations using copper tape (20×3 mm to 40×4 mm). Conductor is inserted into the channel and the screws tightened, drawing the strap down and clamping the conductor against the pipe surface. The joint does not require solder, welding, or compression tooling — installation is tool-free beyond a standard hex key or wrench. Related terms: copper conductor bonding clamp, earthing conductor pipe clamp, flat tape pipe earth clamp.

Equipotential Bonding Applications

Pipe grounding clamps are the primary means of connecting metallic pipework to the main earthing terminal (MET) or local equipotential bonding busbar (EBB) as required by IEC 60364-5-54, BS 7671 Regulation 544.1, IS 732, and NEC Article 250. In domestic and commercial buildings, main bonding conductors (10 mm² copper minimum per BS 7671 / 6 mm² per IS 732) are connected to incoming water and gas pipes using these clamps. In industrial facilities, structural steelwork, cable ladders, and process pipework are bonded using larger clamp sizes. The clamp must be installed on a clean, decoated section of pipe with at least 50 mm of accessible length, as close as practicable to the pipe entry point. Related regulations: IEC 60364-5-54, BS 7671 Chapter 54, IS 732, NEC 250.104.

Corrosion Resistance for Long-Term Service

Bronze pipe clamps installed in damp, buried, or externally exposed environments must resist corrosion without deterioration for the life of the installation (typically 25–40 years per earthing system design life). Silicon bronze and LG2 gunmetal both provide excellent resistance to the corrosive environments encountered in pipe shaft installations, building basements, and buried entry points. The clamp is not rated for direct immersion in flowing water or continuous wet-area installations without additional protection. For installations in aggressive chemical environments, Electrical Accessories India can supply nickel-plated or tinned versions. Related considerations: dezincification, galvanic corrosion with GI pipe, salt-spray resistance, soil burial compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What size pipe clamp do I need for a 2-inch water pipe?

For a standard 2-inch NPS (DN50) steel or copper water pipe, you need a clamp with a saddle inner radius matching the pipe OD of 60.3 mm (ASME B36.10 / ISO 4200). Always specify NPS or DN size and pipe schedule/wall thickness when ordering to ensure correct fitment.

Can bronze pipe clamps be used on GI (galvanised iron) pipes?

Yes. Bronze clamps are compatible with GI pipes. A small area of the pipe surface should be cleaned to bare metal at the clamp installation point to ensure good electrical contact. The bronze-to-GI galvanic couple is acceptable for most earthing installations; however, in high-moisture environments a thin application of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) at the contact interface is recommended to slow any galvanic action.

What conductor size is used with a 3/4″ pipe clamp?

Our 3/4″ (DN20) pipe clamps are sized for conductors in the 6–25 mm² range. For larger conductors (35–70 mm²), use the 1″ (DN25) or larger clamp size which has a deeper conductor channel. Confirm conductor size when ordering.

Are the screws included with the clamp?

Yes. All clamps are supplied as complete assemblies including 2× silicon bronze or SS316 hex-head clamping screws and washers. Replacement screw sets are available separately.

What regulations require pipe bonding clamps in buildings?

In the UK, BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition) Regulation 411.3.1.2 and Part 5-54 require main equipotential bonding conductors to be connected to incoming metallic water and gas pipes using approved bonding clamps. In India, IS 732 Clause 3.4 covers bonding requirements. In the USA, NEC Article 250.104 covers water and gas pipe bonding. IS 3043 covers earthing systems in industrial installations.

Can these clamps be used for lightning protection bonding?

Yes. Bronze pipe clamps are used for bonding metallic pipes and services to lightning protection down conductors and earthing conductors per IEC 62305-3 / BS EN 62305-3 at bonding points. Specify the conductor cross-section and pipe size to ensure the correct clamp is selected.

Do you supply larger sizes above 3 inches?

Yes. Custom sizes from 4″ (DN100) to 6″ (DN150) can be machined to customer drawing and specification. Please provide pipe OD, conductor size, and required clamp material for a custom quotation.

What is the difference between a pipe clamp and a pipe grounding clamp?

A plumbing pipe clamp is a mechanical support fitting. A pipe grounding clamp (earth clamp) is an electrical hardware item designed specifically to make a reliable, low-resistance electrical connection between a grounding conductor and a metallic pipe. They are completely different products and should not be substituted for each other.
