CW511L lead free brass casting is the European designation (EN 12420) for silicon-manganese lead-free brass, composition CuZn42Si2Mn, which is the wrought and hot-forged equivalent of the US C87850 silicon brass casting alloy. CW511L is a lead-free brass bar and forging material that, when machined from solid or used in hot-forged and subsequently machined form, produces components fully compliant with EU Drinking Water Directive 2020/2184/EU, WRAS (UK), KTW W270 (Germany), RoHS 2011/65/EU, and NSF/ANSI 372 via chemical equivalency to ASTM C87850. CW511L Alloy Composition and Technical Properties

CW511L per EN 12420 uses silicon (1.5–2.5%) and manganese (0.3–0.8%) as lead-replacement elements in a copper-zinc (Cu ~57%, Zn ~42%) matrix. Silicon provides chip-breaking behaviour during machining and simultaneously imparts dezincification resistance, making CW511L suitable for aggressive water service without separate DZR-grade specification. The alloy is processed as hot-extrusion rod and bar (for machining-from-solid) and as hot-forgings (for valve and fitting bodies), achieving machinability of 60–75% relative to CW614N free-cutting brass.
